The Sweet Meadow

We are the dreamers of dreams.

The tiny medieval French village Saint-Paul de Vence got me dreaming about clusters of potted gardens and climbing greenery on walls.

After hearing about the death of Gene Wilder this week, the actor who played Willy Wonka in the the original film version of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, it got me thinking about one of Gene's most memorable quotes in the movie: "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams."

So often when family and friends are asking about how my venture is progressing, the conversation always ends with something along the lines of "It's so good to see you chasing your dreams."

It dawned on me that the dream chasing is the hook. That's the reason why so many people love hearing about the The Sweet Meadow. It's not about the fact that I'm opening a vegan cafe in country Victoria. People are interested because they like to see someone following their heart.

Tony A. Gaskins Jr. famously said "If you don't build your dream someone will hire you to help build theirs." So why do so many of us resist the urge to go after our own dreams (it took me two years to pursue mine)? I think this question can be answered with one word: fear. Fear of failure. Fear of rejection. Fear of the unknown. Fear of other's opinions. Or even the worst one of all - fear of shining too brightly.

But who wants to make decisions from a place of being fearful? Our mistakes are often our greatest teachers, and without learning there is no growth.

I was reading about magazine founder Kelley Sheenan, who said, "Whatever you are worried about or whatever is holding you back, it hasn't happened. It doesn't exist! Your thoughts create pathways in your brain and if you are busy thinking of what might go wrong, then your brain chemistry is working on ways to make that happen and to prepare you for the worst. Prepare for the best."

So what are you waiting for? If you want to change your world, you can, but you're the only person who can make it happen. Find the time. Find your way, little by little. If you can't dive in, then at least dip your toe. Your dreams deserve it.
